Use of MRI-ultrasound Fusion to Achieve Targeted Prostate

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common solid-organ malignancy among American men and the second most deadly. Current guidelines recommend a 12-core systematic biopsy following the finding of an elevated serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA). However, this strategy fails to detect an unacceptably high percentage of clinically significant cancers, leading researchers to develop new, innovative MRI-TRUS fusion biopsy device “BioJet®” was approved by FDA after the evaluation of the accuracy with phantoms. We report the BioJet® experience of the manually controlled targeted biopsy using real-time fusion image from mpMRI and TRUS. BioJet allows information from MRI to direct biopsy needles under ultrasound guidance to more accurately target lesions of interest. BioJet performs the biopsy of the prostate transperineally (through the skin of the perineum between anus and base of scrotum).
